Visa Requirements

Nationals of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland as well as nationals of Japan, Yugoslavia, Canada, Moldova, USA, Croatia and South Korea are exempted from the requisites of a visa. Students from these countries can enter Romanian territory with a simple customs stamp and stay for up to 90 days which can be extended for up to 1 year under a residence permit by the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

All other international students must apply for a student visa prior to arrival. Student visas are issued for 30-90 days and within this period, students must complete the registration process at the university and apply for a student residence permit valid for up to 1 year.

International students can apply for a student visa once the Romanian Ministry of Education has issued the letter of acceptance. To apply for a Romanian student visa, the student must complete an application form and submit it along with the required documents to the nearest Romanian Embassy or Consulate.

Students studying in Romania can also apply for a long-stay visa. Students can also apply for an extension if they already have a long-stay visa and a residence permit. Applications for a residence permit and an extension must be submitted to the Romanian Office of Immigration within the Romanian Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs.

Documents required for the application of a long-stay Visa

  • Acceptance letter from Romanian Ministry of Education;
  • Proof of tuition fee of 1 year 
  • Proof of financial resources 
  • Medical insurance for the entire duration of the visa validity;
  • If the student is a minor, approval of the parents or the foster parents for a stay in Romania for study purposes

Documents required for arrival in Romania

  • Passport with a valid visa
  • A copy of the official admission letter
  • Evidence of approximately 2500 US dollars or 2,50,000 INR to indicate that the student has sufficient funds for living and studying in Romania.

Temporary Residence Permit

Students who arrive in Romania and wish to enrol in a university must apply for a residence permit. The residence permit is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. However, residence permits for respective countries or Romanian government scholarship holders are usually for the entire duration of their studies.

Documents required for a residence permit:

  • Application form from the immigration office.
  • Evidence of tuition fee payment issued by the respective University in Romania 
  • A copy of an acceptance letter for studies issued by the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports
  • Medical certificate: a public or private medical institution in Romania can issue it, stating that the student does not suffer from any contagious disease.
  • Evidence of Medical Insurance for those who are above 26 years of age
  • Accommodation proof: House contract must be submitted
  • A valid passport bio-data page and the page showing the entry date at the Romanian border
  • Proof of sufficient funds: Can be a bank statement (minimum of 2500 USD or 2,50,000 INR)
  • Two recent passport photographs
