Geography

Geography studies the natural environmental properties of a place, its inhabitants and the various interactions between the two. It is a multidisciplinary discipline that integrates knowledge from other disciplines around it like physics, astrology, chemistry, biology, mathematics, economics and history.

The geographic study of a place usually involves learning about its topography, the climate and weather conditions, vegetation, and the human responses to the environment by following the industrial, agricultural, urbanisation and other land settlement patterns.

Geography is divided into two types; physical geography that describes natural events through fields of study such as geomorphology, meteorology, glaciology, hydrology, oceanography, biogeography, paedology and ecology, and human geography discusses how humans have influenced the earth’s formation. These include topics like economic, political, health, urban, military, cultural and population geography.

With issues such as climate change, migration, environmental degradation, spatial epidemiology and inequality, geography is one of the most relevant course for students as they will have the potential to be more socially and environmentally sensitive, well informed and responsible global citizens. Using their unique combination of knowledge and skills, students will be able to make a positive difference in the world.
