Accomodation

The cost of living in Germany is surprisingly low compared to other nearby countries like the Netherlands, France and the UK. On average, a student studying in Germany needs about €860 per month for food, accommodation, materials, and other expenses such as health insurance and leisure activities.

With regard to accommodation, the options available for international students include the following:

  • Student Residence: Students can find accommodation in student halls of residence in every university town, which is the most affordable and always in high demand.
  • Flatshares: Flatshares are a type of student accommodation where several students live in privately rented flats together, with each flatmate having a room of their own. A student will pay an average of EUR 363 per month for a room in a shared flat.
  • Privately rented Flats: Students who prefer to live alone can rent their flats, but it is more expensive than the other options.
