About

Bangor University is a public university located in North Wales. It was officially designated as the University College of North Wales in 1884. The University received its Royal Charter in 1885 and was a founding member of the University of Wales until 1893. In 2007 the University gained its independence from the University of Wales and became Bangor University.

The majority of the University's buildings are conveniently located in the heart of the city. Academic buildings, libraries, laboratories, lodging, and sports facilities are a few of the buildings that are a part of the University. The University has its own museum known as the Treborth Bodega, it has a research vessel called the Prince Madog and botanical gardens.

The expertise of the University lies in Biology, Zoology, Environment, Natural Resources and Geography. It was ranked among the top 20 for Biological Sciences in the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF), 6th for Agriculture, Forestry and Food and 19th for Geography and Environmental Sciences in the Guardian University League Tables. Apart from industrial ties, Bangor University also has collaborations with several institutions in Australia, Canada, and China.

Part-time work, work-experience opportunities such as placements and internships, undergraduate and graduate schemes, volunteering, and graduate jobs are just a few of the employability services offered to students. Furthermore, the University aids employers in the recruitment of graduates and post-graduates.

The Employability Hub of the University provides workshops, interactive tools, and helpful resources to students. It awards the Employability Award to students who have developed their personal or professional skills through a variety of work and extra-curricular activities. The Employability Advisers within the University can help with career planning, research, and management, as well as provide input on CVs and applications, interview preparation, and much more.

Success Rate:

According to the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education Survey (2015-16), 83.8% of the University graduates were in employment or seeking further education within six months after completing their graduation.

Student Services: 

The Student Service at the University is there to help students with their academic and personal lives. In addition to job opportunities, it offers services such as support meetings, assessments, and one-on-one counselling, assists students suffering from disabilities, dyslexia, and other learning difficulties. It manages student affairs and provides them with appropriate and helpful resources.

The Study Skill Centre provides a variety of tailored resources and services to assist students in getting the most out of their academic endeavours. The Chaplaincy and Faith Provision team also provides pastoral care and support to students and staff.

Accommodation:

Bangor has a variety of modern, well-equipped, and high-quality lodging options both on and off-campus. Ffriddoedd Village and St. Mary's Village are the two options for student lodging.

The Ffriddoedd Village, located in Upper Bangor, has over 2000 en-suite rooms, as well as the Bar Uno Café bar, the Canolfan Brailsford sports centre, a Laundromat, and some common rooms. St. Mary's Village, on the other hand, is close to the downtown centre and features private restrooms, studios, townhouses, and budget rooms. There are also shops, a café, a fitness centre, an IT suite, a laundry, and a common room.

Health services:

All of the students at the University are provided with health and safety care measures. Accidents and incidents, alcohol and substance abuse, arson, asbestos, asthma, blood pressure, cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, and disabilities are just a few of the issues that the Health and Safety team can help students with. They also provide advice and support to students and staff who are dealing with mental health issues.

Sports Facilities:

The athletic facilities at the University include both indoor and outdoor facilities. Indoor sporting facilities at the university include the Canolfan Brailsford and Normal Site, as well as the St. Mary's Gym, which offers a variety of sports and activities such as weight training, aerobic classes, indoor cricket, squash, and more. The Canolfan Brailsford site, Treborth, and the 3G pitch outdoor facility all provide areas for outdoor activities such as rugby, football, rowing, and athletics. It also provides athletic training camps, fitness classes, a treatment clinic, coaching courses, and scholarship opportunities.

Library Services:

Archives and Special Collections are an important part of the Library Services in Bangor. They have a vast collection of manuscripts that have been preserved, an archival collection, rare and printed materials, articles, conference papers, databases, e-books, e-journals, newspapers, and e-theses. The library assists faculty and staff with scholarly, research, and accessibility issues.

Social Clubs:

Bangor University is ranked second in the UK for Sport and Societies. It has over 150 social clubs and societies, including course-related societies, interest-based societies, and athletics clubs, among others.
