Visa Requirements

A prerequisite for studying in Sweden is a residence permit issued by the Swedish Immigration Service and processed by the Swedish embassy and Consulate of the country of origin. Such permits are issued within 90 days of application and cost about 1500 Swedish kronor.

With regard to the application for a student visa, below is a list of the documentation required:

  • A valid passport.
  • An acceptance letter into a Swedish University with details of duration and payment.
  • Study term equivalent to a minimum of 30 credits.
  • Evidence of financial capability in the form of scholarship or other financial aid covering the course of study and living in the country.
  • Proof of payment of health insurance.
  • All academic transcripts showing the year of completion of the course.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)
  • Relevant proof of documents like work experience, if any.

Process of application:

  • First, the student must confirm their enrolment to their desired University and prepare all the necessary documents per the University’s checklist. They may also need to verify health insurance.
  • Secondly, students must log into the Migrationsverket Website to complete the application form for a residence permit. After completing the form, they must upload the necessary documents and apply.
  • Thirdly, a visa fee of SEK 1500 must be paid through Visa or MasterCard. Once paid, the consulate/embassy will send the student a confirmation email. Upon receiving the confirmation email, students will give their biometric details at the nearest Swedish Embassy/Consulate. A six months extension on the Residence Permit is possible only in the pursuit of employment. Once employed, the student can apply for a Swedish Work Permit Visa.
