This course focuses on providing students with the skills required for applying scientific, economic, social and practical knowledge to build structures, manufacturing machines, design devices, create new materials and processes. An engineering degree is considered to be reputed all around the world since it helps in the building as well as paving the development of a country by implementing the latest trends in technology.

Types of Engineering Courses

Now that you have a basic concept about an Engineering course, we will share with you the different types/levels of Engineering courses available to suit just about everyone, based on the area of interest and specialization. Some of the most common engineering specializations are computer science, information technology, mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics and chemical, etc. Students planning to study Engineering in India have nearly 100 specializations to choose from like Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering among the many. This being said, here are the levels/types of Engineering:

Bachelor’s degree

It is a professional degree program with duration of 4 years having 8 semesters in the course. Candidates must have completed (10+2) education from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects, secured a minimum aggregate marks of 60% in these subjects combined together. Some of the Bachelor degrees you can choose are as follows-

  9. Bachelor of Technology in Agricultural Engineering
  10. Bachelor of Technology in Mining Engineering
  11. Bachelor of Technology in Applied Electronics and Instrumentation
  12. Bachelor of Technology in Automobile Engineering and many more.

Master’s degree

It is a two year course, where students can take specializations in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Electronics among the many. Students who have completed their Bachelor’s degree with a valid score in GATE will be eligible for this course. Keep in mind the line of study or specialization one chooses should be similar to that taken during their Bachelor’s. Some of the Master degrees you can choose from are-

  1. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Process Engineering)
  2. Master of Engineering [ME]
  3. Master of Technology [M.Tech]
  4. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Applied Electronics)
  5. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Manufacturing Science & Engineering)
  6. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Engineering Design)
  7. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering)
  8. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Electronics and Communication Engineering)
  9. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Machine Design)
  10. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Information Technology)
  11. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Software Engineering)
  12. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (VLSI Design & Embedded System)
  13. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Power Electronics)
  14. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Embedded Systems)
  15. Master of Technology [M.Tech] (Electrical Engineering), among the many.

Diploma

This program helps in fulfilling dreams of some by giving them the opportunity to get a fair education on the basic knowledge of Engineering, which would have otherwise been difficult due to financial or other constraints. It prepares a student to fulfill requirements in this field and provides employment opportunities. Interested students should have completed Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC)/ 10th standard/equivalent examination, scoring a minimum of 35% in Science and Mathematics to be able to take up this program. Here are some of the available Diploma courses in engineering-

  1. Diploma in Chemical Engineering
  2. Diploma in Civil Engineering
  3. Diploma in Electrical Engineering
  4. Diploma in Fire & Safety Management
  5. Diploma in Computer Science
  6. Diploma in Mechanical Engineering

Distance

Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor in Technology as a distance degree course is completed in 4 years in India. The duration is divided in semesters, making it a total of 8 semesters. Students have to study 5 subjects in B.Tech distance education, which can be chosen as per the available combinations in the universities. The training and studies involved in B.E and B.Tech are on planning, designing, construction, production testing, etc.

Eligibility and Entrance Exams

Since engineering courses in India are professional courses one can pursue them after completing (10+2) Board examination first. Students must score at least 50% of marks in their education. There are entrance examinations for interested students to appear for as an admission process. Depending on which college, institute or university you want to get admitted to you must appear for the respective examination. Only after securing a desired rank can you opt for engineering course in India. There are various entrance examinations conducted both by the government and private institutes for an Engineering course, depending upon the specialization. The following are some of the Entrance examinations:

  1. JEE Main - Joint Entrance Exam Main
  2. JEE Advanced - Joint Entrance Exam Advanced
  3. KCET - Karnataka Common Entrance Test
  4. VITEEE - VIT Engineering Entrance Exam
  5. APEAMCET - Andhra Pradesh Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Common Entrance Test.
  6. AIEEE (Engineering / Pharmacy / Architecture Entrance Examination
  7. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)
  8. SLIET
  9. State Engineering Entrance Exam
  10. Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Exam

How and when to apply for an engineering course

There are a series of steps to follow in order to get admissions in the above mentioned engineering courses. They are as follows:

  1. After qualifying the entrance exam, respective institutes or states conduct centralised admission process. Students must register for the centralised admission process to avail admission. For instance, if a student qualifies JEE Main, and desires to avail admission in NIT, one must take part in the centralized admission process conducted by JoSAA, where students need to submit a separate application form for each NIT. After the announcement of JEE Main results, students can directly visit the official website of JoSAA and submit the application form.
  2. If students are willing to join in a particular university, they will have to submit an application form through the official website of the respected university. Admission process will be conducted by the varsity separately.
  3. Then a student will be asked to attend counseling sessions. The significance of taking part in a counseling process is that students need to apply for each engineering college in the respective states separately.
  4. If a student wants to take direct admission in an engineering college without an entrance test score, one can do so by submitting a separate application form through the official website of the college or visit the college directly to obtain the application fee.

Kindly be up to date on the dates with regards to the Entrance Examination which you will have to appear. Admissions submissions will begin in the month of March or April. Majority of the states in India initiate the entrance exam process for graduate courses admissions during in March/ April.

Cost of an Engineering Course
